The Issue
The hopelessness of an orphan’s life reaches crisis proportions at age 16. No longer eligible to live in the orphanage, they are released into society. With no strong support network around them, they become easy prey for predators waiting to sweep them into a life of forced prostitution or crime. Most are not ready for an independent life. Aggravated by a host of psychological problems, an absence of any marketable work related skills or ability to make wise choices, all in a very threatening environment, is the reason only 10% ever succeed at achieving any kind of productive lifestyle. Yet these children are expected to successfully integrate into society.
- About 10% of them will commit suicide after leaving the orphanage before their 18th birthday.
- 40% go to prison
- 40% develop lifelong mental disabilities
- 65%-70% of the girls will become trapped/manipulated into the international sex trade or organized crime.
- 70% of the boys will enter a life of crime.
- Only 10% will adjust to life.
